"A doula doesn’t give you strength, she reminds you it’s been yours all along.”

I am SHALISSA ELDER, OR BETTER KNOWN AS YOUR BIRTH PAL SHAL

birth

If you view birth the way that it was meant to be viewed, you will notice that it is ancient, instinctive and powerful. As you move through your pregnancy and towards birth, my role as your doula is to help you feel grounded, informed and supported. To me, this is done with a blend of preparation and presence. It is centred on your autonomy(!!!) and the innate wisdom already living in your body.

  • 2 prenatal visits to explore your values, preferences and create a birth plan that feels aligned and supportive,
  • On-call availability from 38–42 weeks so you can reach me the moment you need support,
  • Unlimited text, phone and email support throughout pregnancy and into the early postpartum period
  • Continuous birth support: physical comfort, emotional grounding, mindful presence, advocacy support and evidence-based guidance
  • Photography coverage documenting your birth story, delivered via online, downloadable gallery (you may opt out if you prefer)
  • 2 in-home postpartum visit for birth processing, gentle guidance and integration
  • Custom placenta print,
  • Option to add-on a maternity and newborn photography session for $500 ($500 off regular pricing, two for the price of one)

LACTATION

TAKE ME TO THE BREASTFEEDING PREPARATION COURSE *COMING SOON*

When the women in my life have babies, they don’t schedule a time to ask feeding questions. They text me while sitting on the couch at 1am with a crying newborn. They text me when they are scared to trust their body or don’t know what is normal.

Every time it happens, I think about how strange it is that this kind of support is usually only available to friends or insiders. Mothers were meant to be surrounded by experienced women who could walk with them through feeding, not just evaluate it or go through a checklist with them at their routine appointments.

It became clear to me that creating private lactation text support was my way of bringing a little bit of that village back. 7 day text support is now available, and many families are booking it ahead of time to ensure the support they may need is lined up.

Birth processing call

$30 plus taxes

A birth processing call is a space to unpack your experience with someone who understands birth from both an emotional and physiological perspective. This 30-minute call offers you support as you move through your thoughts, questions, memories and emotions surrounding your experience. We can talk through your birth story, clarify events that may feel confusing, hold space for grief or celebration and my hope is that you get off of the call feeling seen and supported in whatever your experience was. This call is available virtually and is open to anyone, whether or not I attended your birth.

FAQ

WHAT IS A DOULA?

A doula is a trained, non-medical professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support during significant life events. Most commonly associated with pregnancy and childbirth, they help clients navigate the birthing process. Although, there are doulas who also support people throughout death. Support for each looks a little bit different, but the underlying foundation of being a doula is essentially the same. Doulas want you to feel supported, heard and informed about the choices that you have.

What is the evidence on doulas?

Research on doulas consistently shows improved outcomes for both mothers and babies, especially in areas like intervention rates, satisfaction, emotional wellbeing, how a women feels about her birth experience and breastfeeding support.

Here are some of the most commonly cited findings in labour support studies:

  • Mothers supported by a doula are more likely to have a spontaneous vaginal birth.
  • Continuous support is associated with lower cesarean rates.
  • Labor is often shorter.
  • There is reduced use of epidurals, synthetic oxytocin, forceps, and vacuum extraction.
  • Mothers report feeling more positive and satisfied with their birth experiences.
  • Babies are less likely to have low APGAR scores at birth.
  • Breastfeeding initiation and confidence tend to improve postpartum.
  • Emotional outcomes, including postpartum anxiety and birth trauma perception, may improve with continuous support.

FAQ

ARE YOU CERTIFIED IN LACTATION SUPPORT?

While I am not an IBCLC, I am certified in lactation support for birth workers. I have personal experience breastfeeding four children and years of experience supporting my birth and postpartum clients with lactation support. When additional support outside of my scope of practice is needed, resources and referrals will be shared.

WHAT KIND OF LACTATION CHALLENGES DO YOU SUPPORT?

I can help with latch and positioning, establishing milk supply and supporting families through common breastfeeding frustrations. I also often help navigate the emotional and physical aspects of breastfeeding so that parents feel supported. If a challenge requires specialized care, I can guide families to a trusted IBCLC or medical resource, if necessary.

FAQ

DO YOU OFFER BIRTH PHOTOGRAPHY ONLY, WITHOUT DOULA SUPPORT?

Before I became a doula, I exclusively documented births and weddings. Throughout time, doula support services became my primary booking as many find that the combination of both photography and support is the best option. However, if you are interested in birth photography coverage only, I offer this for $1,000 plus taxes. Birth galleries are on average 150 images and are delivered within 4 weeks via online, downloadable gallery.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I BOOK BIRTH PHOTOGRAPHY AND YOU MISS MY BIRTH?

In nearly ten years of supporting births, I have only ever missed one. While it is very rare, birth is unpredictable and there are occasional circumstances that can happen, which is why this is all covered in detail within my contract.

If you are booking both birth photography and birth support (and I am unable to attend your birth), I will make up the difference in value through additional postpartum support. If you have booked birth photography only, I will offer a newborn session or another future session of your choice to make up for the missed coverage instead.

"

shalissa is my go to photographer. she is warm, welcoming, kind, and always makes us feel comfortable. she's taken pictures for us with babies, pregnancies, breast feeding and family pictures with our dog and two kids and i've loved every single shot. nothing but amazing things to say about her.

Randi (Regina, SK)

"

We had such a wonderful experience with Shalissa as our birth photographer. She went above and beyond throughout my labour (which spanned multiple days), checking in several times to make sure she didn't miss any important moments. Her thoughtfulness and commitment were so appreciated.

ELYSE (REGINA, sk)

"

Even in such a vulnerable and sacred space, I felt completely comfortable having her present at my birth. Her presence was calm, supportive, and respectful. her background as a doula really shines through.

Shalissa is truly someone you want in your corner, not just behind the camera.
